In 1908, Balboa Island was born of mud dredged from Newport Bay. In 1919, Joe Beek obtained the first contract for a ferry between the island and the Balboa Peninsula. Ferry service continues to this day with three 64-foot boats. The ferry, Balboa Island, the peninsula, and Newport Bay have been a great source of fun and memories for my family.
