I did a lot of thinking before starting this painting. First, I generated many reference images with prompts to Midjourney, my preferred AI image generator. I settled on this composition for its striking religious message and artistic challenge reminiscent of Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro. The soft-edged colorful rays of light striking Jesus on the cross in a darkened church pose a unique watercolor challenge. I decided to use masking fluid for Jesus. But I applied gum arabic on the areas to be represented as light rays. I then painted a dark background around the stained glass and crucifix. With wet brushes and Q-tips I began lifting the light rays and subsequently added light shades of yellow and orange.

Unlike my “quick paintings” in the past couple of newsletters, this painting required far more than four hours to complete, but I enjoyed every minute.
