Every year Ellie and I drive up the west coast from LA to Seattle enjoying the scenery and taking hundreds of reference photographs. A must-stop is Mendocino, a small artist community of about 1,000 people, 155 miles north of San Francisco, 10 miles south of Fort Bragg, located on a headland surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. Founded in 1852 as a logging and fishing community, the Mendocino Art Center was formed in 1959 and the town has become home to many artists and several small-but-great galleries.
I’ve taken many pictures of the Mendocino Presbyterian Church on Main Street (California Historical Landmark #714) sitting high above a driftwood-covered beach where Big River meets the Pacific, hoping to get the perfect composition for a painting. But I’ve always come up short. This month I used Midjourney AI to generate hundreds of reference images from which I selected elements to paint “Catchin’ Drifters” shown above …. a church and location that attracts driftwood and visitors alike.
