Part of the enjoyment of painting is the time spent reflecting, inspired by the composition. But, while painting this American flag, thoughts surfaced that went far deeper than usual. Coincidentally, I began this painting during the Olympics as our athletes joyfully represented the USA. In the world’s largest arena, after years of commitment, focus, and hard work, each athlete “dares greatly” and “strives valiantly.” Yet, the difference between victory and defeat is often measured in milliseconds or fractions of an inch. It is competition that fosters achievement and the Olympics are the epitome of athletic competition.

Now, our country is in the midst of political competition. Both the Republican and Democratic Parties are preparing for the great race in November. And, once again, the entire world is watching. Rather than become absorbed in the chaotic mud-slinging, I optimistically view politics as a necessary process wherein our democracy chooses alternatives to refine itself while protecting our explicit and implied rights as defined in our Constitution. We are a nation striving to remain strong, while maintaining peace with freedom, with a balance of political competition and concern for the common good.

Being an old maritime artist, I placed our flag on an equally old sailing ship. The setting reminds me of our origins…a nation of immigrants willing to face adversity for ideals so valued in America that we repeatedly defend them with the ultimate sacrifice.

I had many thoughts about the incredible freedoms and opportunities I enjoyed growing up. I thought about how fortunate I was to meet my wife and together provide those same gifts for our children… and they, in turn, for our grandchildren.

I also realize that we are not a perfect nation. But after a long life of making many personal mistakes, I can accept imperfection if it leads to understanding and improvement. I believe that’s how God made us…to be inspired by his creations and be active discovering our value and purpose realizing we will need his help to succeed.

So, I am incredibly thankful to be here, and “God Bless America” is my wish for continued improvement and prosperity.
